Our patron

Kazimierz Funk was a Polish biochemist who made significant contributions to the field of nutrition and is known for his discovery of vitamins. Funk’s most notable achievement was his identification of a group of organic compounds that he named „vitamines”. In 1911, he proposed that certain diseases, such as scurvy and beriberi, were caused by deficiencies in specific substances found in food. Funk conducted extensive research on these substances and isolated them from various sources, including rice husks and lemon juice.

His work on vitamins played a crucial role in understanding their importance in maintaining overall health and preventing diseases caused by their deficiencies. Funk’s findings revolutionized the field of nutrition and led to the development of vitamin supplements, which have had a significant impact on public health worldwide. Throughout his career, Funk also made contributions to the study of hormones, enzymes, and antibiotics.
